1.    Name two search engines. Describe their benefits and suggest how you could use this search engine to obtain product information and technical support.

Google Scholar: is a site that specific information can be accessed, it also has the ability to access citations and may link directly to full text articles that in the past would have only been available from a library.

Google: is a very powerful web browsing search engine, google uses a special alogorithm to generate results. Without a search engine such as google it would be impossible to find information you need by browsing the web.

2.    Name two browsers.

Safari and Firefox.

3.    What is a URL.

Uniform Resource Locator: in webpages http web address.

4.    What Is HTML.

Short for Hyper Text Mark Up Language, is the authoring language used to create documents on the world wide web.

5.    What Is Shareware.

May be known as trialware or demoware, a proprietary software that is provide on a short term basis as a trial. This may be a full featured trial or only a full version after a license is purchased.

6.    What Is A Zip File.

A computer file or folder whose contents are compressed for storage or transmission.

7.    Approximately how long would it take to download a hundred megsbytes of data at broadband speed.

Broadband cable @512Kb = 27 minutes & 18 seconds.

8.    What Are Cookies.

There many different types of cookies for different purposes, cookies are small files stored on a user’s computer/browser upon a user using a login or entering information on a website, they serve a purpose as a convenient way to store a modest amount of a user’s information on a website or related sites without having to burden a server to carry huge amounts of data pertaining to the user.

Allows transfer of files between two computers on the internet

10.  When Should You Scan For Viruses.

Most anti virus programs have an automatic scan on a scheduled time but if not a scan should occur at least once a week.

11. Who Owns Copyright On The Types Of Data You Retrieve.

The originator is the owner of whatever was created eg: photo, design etc, you must gain permission to use or in a academic field give credit and reference.

12. What Is The Difference  Between Java And Javascript.

Both are different programming language, java creates an application that runs in a browser and javasript is a scripting language. The main use of javascript is to provide a level of interactivity to web pages whereas java is a stand alone program.

13.  Name Some Online Tools.

Cloud, Gmail, drop box, evernote and Google drive.

14. List The Devices Are Available To view Websites.

All computers with internet access, all phones with internet access, Tv’s with internet access, ipads and tablets with internet access, play station devices with internet access.

15. Describe The Importance Of Privacy And Security Measures related to Online Tasks.

The internet in particular and technology in general will continue to grow and become an increasingly larger part of our lives, just look at facebook and the effect this has had on the population life has become more public rather than private. Everytime you log onto the internet whether you use an iphone, ipad or computer your privacy may be compromised and most people are unaware.

The importance of your privacy online today is more important than ever before with millions of people carrying or using internet devices.

It is important to think prior to posting anything on the internet as once it is released it is very difficult to control what someone else may do with that information. Some guidelines to keeping safe whilst using the internet are thinking prior to posting anything online, think before you post personal information on the net, keep passwords strong by using numbers and symbols and capitals, smartphones can pinpoint your location and publish this online telling the world where you are. Using privacy settings to block unwanted user’s, install security software, turn on automatic updates on all your software.

Be vary wary about opening email attachments from your inbox if you do not recognize the sender it is probably safer to delete the item. The internet and social sites are a wonderful tool to keep abreast of the world and to make new friends, but is also a world to be very wary of  and to take all precautions that are necessary to keep yourself safe and to keep private information private.

16. What Information Would You Refuse To Provide When Filling Out A Form On A Web Page.

On a web page that I did not know or a first time user I would certainly limit the information I would supply. I would certainly not give my banking details/credit debit card information nor would I give other personal information without verifying the user at the other end and what will my information be used for.

Learning Activity 02 – Email Etiquette

I always use a subject line as this is really just a courtesy thing, I don’t like when people cry wolf by making their emails high priority for really no reason. I try to summarize my emails as much as possible making them brief and to the point, manners in emails I consider are very important and relevant to any email whether it is business or social. Replies are a difficult one some require replies virtually immediately whilst others require thought before a response. I do hate the world we find ourselves in that most people expect a reply within minutes of forwarding their email to you. Emails between employee and employer should be used to summarize events or follow up but not replace the face to face meetings that should occur. Most importantly to remember when using email is that your recipient may not be the only person reading your correspondence, always be professional, never send angry or aggressive responses even if you think they may be justified. Email is a great tool to use and very useful for elaborating on a conversation when conversing with someone a great distance from you, although when someone is across the hall from you email is not the best tool to convey a message when face to face would be considered more appropriate.

* Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Exalead are just a few of many search engines. I particularly like google scholar but it depends on the information you are searching for, forums are a great source of information and may help in narrowing down any search ie: someone else may have performed similar searches and performed all the hard work for you. I stumbled across a multitude of search engines and have placed the link below:

*Narrowing down your search by using specific keywords also using simple terms.

*Placing related: in front of your search term will also bring up related sites which may help you in narrowing the search

*Using google wildcard *, using this technique with a one word search google will bring up items it deems relevant to the term although this may also widen your search but it also brings opportunity for narrowing your search.

*And is classified as a stop word but by placing a + in front of AND this is telling the search engine to include those words in the results.

In this activity we were asked to visualise a character using type only, mine may not fit this criteria, not an easy activity.

Use The Scanner To Tell A Story

I have managed to fit nine/ten (oops!) things that represent me in some way on a scanner.

1. I have a picture of a statue at the entrance to Binalong Bay - East Coast Tasmania, Mandy and all the kids are standing along side. This place really feels like home! I have been visiting since 1988, I intend to live here one day.
2. Small diary dating back to 1988, this holds memories of purchasing a house, having our first child, notes about our 1st wedding anniversary and many other little things which are nice to look back on.
3. A lighter, I am a smoker but I am determined to give this habit away over 2014.
4. Phone, in today's age and also my employment a must have item, although I do have day's that I could do without it.
5.  Watch, I must admit I have a fetish with watches. I have kept a lot from my childhood and have collected others along the way.
6. The yellow handled thing is a stapler I use when picture framing, this probably is the smallest tool I could find to place on the scanner. I enjoy working with wood and would like to expand my knowledge of framing.
7. Most Of my teenage years and up to the age of approximately 45 I have been involved with martial arts. 
8. A rock, my wife and I are always on the look out for any thing that is unusual concerning rocks.
9. My camera 7d canon, I have a couple of camera's and I usually have one close by at all times. I have just ordered a lens 24-70 mm f2 canon L and can't wait to try it out.

It seems I have placed 10 items on the scanner so I may as well tell you about the 10th item, this is a money box but what you cannot see it is modelled on a British phone box. I placed this item on the scanner to say both Mandy and I are planning a trip to Europe soon, Mandy has family in Birmingham and has been to see them but I have yet to leave the shores of Australia.
